Nobody wants more
complications in their life than
they already have, let alone
voluntarily acquiring another.
However, in this case, the
complications in question
actually make life simpler. That’s
because an ingenious craftsman
solved the puzzle in order to
enhance the user’s experience.
TheWorldTimer
Do you get around quite a bit? Or
deal with colleagues in other parts
of the world. With a world timer
complication, you won’t be waking
them up at 4 in the morning when
you call, unless you want to. Wearing
a watch with a world-time function
means that you can surf through the
world’s time zones instantly.
Equation of Time
While this sounds like subject matter
for astrophysicists, there’s nothing
theoretical about it. For most of
history, the daily passage of time was
denoted by the Sun. Solar Noon occurs
when the Sun stands at its highest
elevation above the local horizon when
it transits the north-south meridian.
The trouble is, the apparent passage of
solar time doesn’t exactly match what
we call solar mean time, or the 24
hour rotation of the Earth. In fact, this
discrepancy can add up to as much as
more than 16 minutes ahead of solar
noon in late October and November
and over 12 minutes behind it in
February. An equation of time watch
shows the difference between “true”
solar time and “mean” solar time which
we commonly refer to.
Laptimer
While the split-second chronograph is
already a considerable achievement,
the lap timer takes this concept to
another level. In a chronograph, you
press the split-second push piece, one
had stops while the second hand keeps
going. Audemars Piguet’s laptimer,
pictured on this page has one chrono-
graph driving two central hands which
can be controlled independently by
three push-pieces. This affords the user
maximum flexibilitywhen timing an
event. This is the first mechanical chro-
nograph with alternating consecutive
lap timing and flyback.
