Bare Essentials

When you look at the common watch, you have no way

to see what’s inside unless you have the tools to open

it. It may as well be an assortment of plastic bits for all

you know.

Steve Jobs, of computer fame, insisted that his products

be as beautiful inside as out, even if one never gets to

see within.... a trait he got from his adoptive machinist

father. All aspects of a machine must be made with the

same passion and precision as the outer surface. These

criteria have a deep impact on the quality of the finished

product. Nothing superfluous.

In watch-making, some manufacturers are so proud of

the inner workings of their timepieces that they’ve al-

lowed a peek inside. In order to optimise one’s viewing

pleasure, non-essential metal on the bridge, plate, wheel

train and elsewhere are minimized leaving as much of

the inner workings as visible as possible. Only the bare

skeleton of the movement remains. This can be addition-

ally adorned according to the whims of the watchmaker.
