SAINT
MARTIN
The Terres-Basses is an extremely elegant
residential area. More than 100 villas, ranging
from relatively modest to highly extravagant,
are dotted throughout the gentle hills.
Most of them belong to wealthy French or American
businessmen, although a few celebrities live tucked
in between them, sheltered from prying eyes.
The main tourist attraction of the area is the variety
of beautiful beaches. Baie Rouge, Plum Bay and Baie
Longue are stunning, romantic beaches where the
subtly hued sands are often almost deserted. It is said
to be the best place on the island from which to view
the sunset. On a cliff, discreetly tucked away down a
side street, is the ultimate luxury hotel, La Samanna.

David’s Hole, also known as Devil’s Hole, is a deep
cavity in the cliff that was formed by the collapse of
rocks thousands of years old.
It is accessible by a small dirt road to the right of Baie Rouge.
A natural arch links the rock to the sea. It is a world-class
geological site and a wonderful spot for scuba diving.
